The Killers - Albums Ranked

Kieran Williamson • Sep 02, 2021

Albums ranked worse to best!

The Killers are an American rock band formed in 2001 with frontman Brandon Flowers, leading guitarist and backing vocalist Dave Keuning, bass and rhythm guitarist Mark Stroemer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. The band has been through different lineups until 2002, where they settled down with this group of 4. Anyway, here is my opinion on their albums, ranked worse to best!

7) Pressure Machine (2021)

Pressure Machine had almost zero announcements for its existence. Besides a few teasers on their YouTube channel, everything just came out of the blue. It acts as a tribute album to the famous musician ‘Bruce Springsteen’, dedicated in his style. Unfortunately, it feels less like The Killers and too much like Springsteen’s work, hardly utilizing their own style into the mix. Album plays a very melancholy consistent tone with tracks like ‘Terrible Thing’, ‘Desperate Things’ and ‘The Getting By’. Some songs do stand out as good tracks but nothing incredible in my eyes, with tracks like ‘Sleepwalker’, ‘Quiet Town’ and ‘In Another Life’ having some memorable moments that made them decent but still feels kind of off from the band and heavily fixates on being a respectable tribute album.

Score: 2/5

6) Wonderful Wonderful (2017)

The first Killer’s album I got to experience as a fan and I must say, it’s not bad but nothing great either. The turning point in The Killer’s music from a rocky sound to a softer ray of sounds as this album showcases songs that fans could never think of them doing. ‘The Man’ and ‘Run For Cover’ both keep a vibrant energetic feel which most of the album avoids as the rest remains in a tame and relaxed aesthetic. The self-title track ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ and ‘Tyson vs Douglas’ are stuck more on the calm side but stand out enough from the other tracks that do as well. The reason this album is above Pressure Machine is due to having The Killer’s own sound instead and for trying something unique. Nothing is terrible but quite often bland.

Score: 2.5/5

5) Battle Born (2012)

Battle Born failed to captivate the success and magic of the first three albums and it’s not a big surprise why. The album doesn’t feel unique and takes elements of the first two albums Hot Fuss and Sam’s Town while spinning its own tunes as well. Not many tracks here are too catchy or memorable enough to be a personal The Killers favourites, but I find this album stronger than Wonderful Wonderful and Pressure Machine due to remaining consistently good throughout. I am quite fond of ‘Miss Atomic Bomb’, ‘Runaways’ and self-titled track ‘Battle Born’ for being good choices for radio singles and being overall good songs. The best tracks however, are the hidden gems off the album like ‘A Matter Of Time’, ‘Flesh and Bone’ and ‘From Here On Out’ for remaining unique and having a catchy sound that gets played on my mix regularly.

Score: 3/5

4) Day & Age (2008)

Day & Age is home to two of The Killer’s most notable pieces, ‘Human’ and ‘Spaceman’. Both these tracks alone are fantastic in their own way and give you a base idea of what the album is like, Synth-heavy. The path to this decision was executed quite well with other magnificent tunes like ‘A Dustland Fairytale’ and ‘Joy Ride’ which emanates some groovy and creative moments that knock some of their best work right out of the park. The only downside is the album isn’t consistently intriguing to me with the latter half being a bit too bland and repetitive, despite the tracks excelling into good territory of their music. This album is also known to one of the dumbest lyrics recorded, being Are we human or are we dancer? from the hit single ‘Human’.

Score: 4/5

3) Sam's Town (2006)

While it’s one of the least creative albums from The Killers and keeps a similar rocky tone that Hot Fuss did, it still remains a fun listen to blast through start to finish. The last few tracks remain weaker than the rest as they blast out so many catchy riffs, brilliant vocal performances by Brandon Flowers (once again) and overall, they add that extra magic that makes The Killer’s music pop out as their own style. Hits like ‘When We Were Young’ and ‘Read My Mind’ are phenomenal masterpieces and they aren’t even my favourite tracks off the album. ‘Sam’s Town’ and ‘Bones’ debatably sneak into my top 10 out of all their tracks as these songs just give a nice blast of nostalgia into my ears while triumphantly going all out with a powerful chorus and some of their best guitar work to date. Deserved top 3 for sure.

Score: 4/5

2) Hot Fuss (2004)

One of rock’s biggest debut albums of the 21st century, up there with Arctic Monkey’s ‘Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not’ and The Strokes ‘Is This It’. The Killer’s most iconic tunes lies here in this massive successful album with hits like ‘Somebody Told Me’ and especially ‘Mr. Brightside’ which has charted into Spotify’s top 100 streamed tracks of all time, with over 1.1billion streams. This multi-platinum album has other hits like ‘All These Things I’ve Done’ and ‘Smile Like You Mean It’ which also get regularly spun on radio stations to this day. Like a lot of their albums, the second half isn’t as good as the first but, they have really good tracks upon this portion of the album still.

Score: 5/5

1) Imploding The Mirage (2020)

An odd choice for number one since the big album Hot Fuss is filled with fantastic tunes and so many iconic moments that helped garnish the success they deserved, but I personally found this album to just top it ever so slightly. Sure it’s not the most unique album as it is synth-heavy like Day & Age and almost completely ditches rock, but the sound we get from this album is absolute bliss. Nothing at all drags on or bores me even a little, instead they mainly get me in a good positive mood as that is what a great portion of this album achieves at. ‘My Soul’s Own Warning’ and ‘Caution’ were the singles that opened my mind to what could be a fantastic album as these songs are some of my favourites from the band, then ‘Dying Breed’ came along. Another outstanding track to show off what could be the most hyped I’ve ever been to a Killer’s album and I wasn’t disappointed. ‘Running Towards A Place’, ‘Blowback’ and ‘Lightning Fields’ are only a few of the wonders this album presents that hit hard as well. While most would disagree, this is truly the best Killer’s album by far.

Score: 5/5
