#iDare... to look into issues that affect us

On Thursday 10th of September 2020 at approximately 6.30pm there was a stabbing in The Circle in Pinehurst Swindon. The person who was stabbed was taken to hospital and was released later that night. At the time three people were arrested. On Friday 11th of September 2020 there were two more arrests, a 16 year old was arrested for GBH* with intent, a 16 year old was arrested for criminal damage, two 22 year olds were arrested for affray* and a 15 year old was arrested for affray*.

The impact on me

The night that the stabbing happen I could not sleep and I am afraid to go out to the shops after 6 o'Clock at night. When I do go to the shops I am always looking around me and if someone gets to close to me I feel that my heart rate and my anxiety goes up. I may look calm on the outside but on the inside I am always on alert.

Why do people do knife crimes?

Experts say that knife crime is a symptom of the toxic environments that adults create around children, who then become both perpetrators and victims.

1. Homes, schools, neighbourhoods or recreational activities can become toxic environments for children, when their relationships and experiences fail them.

2. Children and young people are afraid of becoming victims so they carry knives to protect themselves.

The statistics of knife crime

There is 7% increase in the number of offences involving knives or sharp instruments. The number of fatal stabbing in 2014 were 55 and gone steadily up, in 2019 the number reached 90 according to Police figures in London.

How many have died from knife crime?

In 2018 there were 285 killings by a knife or sharp instrument. The office of national statistics analysis shows that one in four (71) of total victims (285) where men aged 18-24.
