Managing Your Mental Energy

#iDareToLookAfterMyself

We asked Tony (our youth worker) what tips he had for making sure that we look after ourselves during this difficult time. Here's what he had to say:

-----------
Looking after your mental energy
Energy is what keeps us focused, motivated, engaged, and with an authentic smile on our face. But it's not always easy to muster up! When we are stressed, (in times like COVID-19!) we need to take chunks out of our day to nourish ourselves and recharge our batteries because mental stress can actually be quite draining, and we can burn out quite easily if we just keep pushing ourselves to spend time on things regardless of how we feel.

What is mental energy?
If you think of your energy as a big pile of sand in your hands every morning, and as you move through your day you use up energy on the things you do and think about. So if you focus on tasks that you have no control over, at some point during the day you will look down and see your hands empty, but your situation exactly the same. Then, our tired brains get angry at us and tell us that we are useless, when in reality we have just tried to do something with low energy. BUT STOP! You’re not what that little voice is telling you! We couldn't run a marathon with no food, and in the same way, our brain needs energy to work well.

Avoiding Energy Drains
Focusing on the really big things in the world (like a worldwide virus!) will drain your energy quickly, so if your brain is spending hours performing mental gymnastics, guess what? You got it - your energy is being wasted on something that you have no control over. And trying to force your brain to focus on something when it doesn't have enough energy to do so is also mentally exhausting. So when you're doing school, College or other work, try to schedule it in when you're feeling most productive / energised / focused, and make sure you schedule breaks and get up and move about.

Building your day around your energy.
Tomorrow, set yourself a small schedule (do it when you feel at your best!) and plan in to spend time on energy breaks. This is doing things that make you happy and therefore recharges your energy, so make sure you give yourself that time. Music, walking, art, talking, Healthy food & lots of sleep, No two people are the same, it’s your choice. Use the chart below to help you out. Have fun x
