Making Models

#iDareToMakeModels

I’m just getting in to making models of planes and cars. In model making you have to have patience and dedication. The art of making
models is an easy hobby to get into as the kits are reasonably priced and in my opinion easy to do. My next projects at the moment are some of the Star Wars kits. I have made a quick build of a Airfix Red Arrow Hark and the Airfix McLaren P1 and I have done the normal kit of
the Hawker Hurricane Mk.1. And the Revell Red Arrow Hark which is a normal kit.

The different types of kits are quick build and then starter kits and then normal kits. Quick build models are part Lego part model, starter kits are the normal kits that come with the model and instructions and glue and paint, normal kits are the kits that have not got the glue and paint just the model and instructions.

How did I get into making models?

I watched my dad making models and asked how to start and he asked his group for advice and they said to do a quick build and than go on to the normal kits. My dad has been making models for over 40 years on and off.

What shops in and around Swindon can you get model kits?

There are a lot of shops in and around Swindon alone: Hobbycraft, Shop-on Models, Modelmaniacs, Hornby and Firestorm Games.

What brands are there for models kits?

Airfix, Italeri, Revell and Tamiya.

Airfix is the oldest manufacturer of injection-moulded plastic scale model kits of aircraft and other objects. Airfix was founded in 1939.
Airfix was owned by Humbrol from 1986 until 2006. Since 2007 both Humbrol and Airfix have been owned by Hornby. In my opinion they
are very good because they join together nicely and the paint goes on cleanly.

Italeri is an Italian manufacturer of plastic scale models of airplanes, military vehicles, helicopters, ships, trucks, and cars.

I’ve never used these so I can’t give an opinion.

Revell is a manufacturer of plastic scale models. In my opinion they are not very good because the parts do not fit together smoothly and
they need filler.

Tamiya is a Japanese manufacturer of plastic models. I’ve never used them so I can’t give an opinion

How much is it going to cost to make models?

The cheapest model kits are £5.50 and the dearest is £400 (this is Hobbycraft). The cheapest model kits are £6.29 and the dearest is
£120 (this is Modelmaniacs). These are the prices from only two shops in and around Swindon so prices may vary.

What Facebook groups can you join?

The Friendly Group For Plastic Model Kit Builders (Airfix, Revell,)
Being a member of the groups is useful because if you need help you can ask and the groups will help.
