Blood Red Sky (2021) Film Review

Great Emotion and Horror with at Times Messy Pacing

This film works best when it is focusing on the theme of the mother and son, you feel for their relationship as the mother is forced to confront her illness at the risk of losing control over protecting her son’s life. This is an interesting and complex dilemma not often seen in horror films that I would like to see more of where the protagonist is already infected by the monster and is on borrowed time as the main lead is very compelling and credit to Peri Baumeister for her performance under all the prosthetics. Furthermore, the horror moments are very good reminding me of ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘Alien’ without feeling like a complete rip off in its claustrophobic and tension building scenes. Meanwhile the prosthetics and make up are very good as I much prefer when vampires have a monster look and feel to them.

However, there are parts in the film where it struggles to know what it wants to do next, like it’s looking for something to do and just goes with it and not feeling like a natural continuation for the plot. It’s like the writers just went, why not and did whatever came to their head. This also creates a lot of conveniences and some silly moments where characters can do and know certain things. The villains can also be a bit bland and at times cartoonish. Furthermore, it does drag a bit towards the end making what feels like a sequel as it goes out into a fourth act.

Overall, I was invested and the film kept my attention throughout its duration despite some plot holes and underdeveloped supporting characters, but has enough good horror elements and family moments with a great lead performance to make it stand out.

Overall Rating: 3.5/ 5
