Artists That Have Inspired My Work

Tyler Goulding • Aug 18, 2021

Artists that have inspired me are Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. With Andy Warhol what I found inspirational was the range of colours he uses that makes art stand out and pop to the eye when you look at it. I also like the simplicity of the image he has drawn and the way the colours are portrayed that brings another story out from his artwork. These techniques I have also used in my work but trying to do it through different mediums like watercolour, feltips, pencil and pastel.

Another artist that has inspired me is Roy Lichtenstein as his work is layed out to give a theme of a comic book story and the way he uses his colours and detail makes you feel like you're being pulled into the art work itself. My favorite piece is the “WHAAM” art he created as it really stands out to the eye and portrays a real scenario of when planes fight, but also gives a bit of a funny comic book feal to it. He also uses colours based on the four colours of printer inks. This has got me into doing the same thing with my art with the funny comic book feel and also the giving of a scenario.

My Artwork Designs

Feltip and watercolour designs

I created my dragon eye piece using pencils to draw the outline of the eye and the features around it. Then I planned out what medium I was going to use to shade it in. I decided to go with using feltips as I wanted a challenge because I have never used this medium before as I have mostly focused on acrylic. I achieved the tone and blending using different shades of red feltips and using a vibrant yellow and orange to make the pop out to the eye.

This piece of art is of a rose, buttercup and some extras with a little pocket watch. I got this idea as my grandad is always in the garden, he owns a pocket watch and is constantly checking on it. So, I sketched out where I wanted everything then I went ahead with painting the pocket watch first then I moved to the pieces that are behind and worked forward using watercolour so I waited for it to dry between transitions and finished with the rose in the middle.

This piece of work is a little idea that I came up with when I was at collage with my friends, we were setting challenges to do art in the time we had for lunch. So, my friend James said to do something related to Japan. Therefore, I sketched out the head and features then went straight to water colouring it and I tried to add shading in the water with black but kept adding water to it and it looks like the boat is reflecting.

I am recently now doing art of landscapes and woodland areas using watercolour, so what I planned is when I'm doing exercise or taking a stroll I would take photos of areas I like and hills. I would then take them home and I would spend the rest of my day drawing it and painting it. I experiment with the colours slightly to add more depth as you would see with your eye compared to the camera. I do have a art portfolio where some of my artwork is posted on Instagram.
